The economic principle I’m exploring is , people generally respond to incentives in predictable ways & institutions are the “rules of the game” that influence choices. My research question to help me study the economic principle is, “How does social media cookies force decision making?” The article published in Zoomph titled “From Cookies to People: An Introduction to People-Based Marketing” demonstrates this economic principle because it shows how social media has new technology specifically designed to attract to each individual pushing the purchase of products.
First, Allison Lee states that “ streaming sites and social media, support persistent person IDs, making them “more indicative of buyer personalities because you can get so much more data on specific individuals whom you can study over time.” This means that every person who interacts with social media or the internet has their own ID that is personalized to your interests based on what you search in order to attract attention to persuade someone to purchase a product.
Second, she states “as consumers create and engage with content for hours in a day, the data around their identities grows, painting a fuller picture of their genuine values and opinions.” Exactly what I mentioned above is that the more you search on the internet the more they can personalize ads that they put on you social media pages to get you to purchase products that you have looked at or are similar to what you may like.
Third, she also states “ It involves personalizing your marketing to expressed interests as opposed to surface-level demographics and purchased data.” I have this personally happened to me, I was online shopping for clothes from some of my favorite stores and an hour later as I am scrolling through my instagram feed the same item of clothing is being advertised to “purchase now”. I personally think this new cookie method is very creepy and invades privacy but it is smart because I have ended up purchasing the products through social media because it’s easy to access.
In my next blog post I will research: “How successful social media is with affecting the decision making process through its ads” .
