Listeners and Musicians Both Benefit from Concerts and Merchandise

The economic principle I’m focusing on in this post is “people gain when they trade voluntarily,” as well as “people generally respond to incentives in predictable ways.” Musicians often can’t convince people to buy their music legally. This is because the listeners don’t gain from paying for music when they have the option of illegally downloading it for free. Because of this, musicians make most of their money in other ways. Musicians make money from concerts and merchandise, and listeners also benefit from this.

According to the article “How Do Musicians Make Money?” from Beat, Musicians make a large portion of their income by selling merchandise such as tee shirts or phone cases. Both parties gain from this. The musician gains money and the listener gains a tee shirt or anything else they bought. The listener’s incentive for buying merchandise is that they want to show people that they like a certain musician and represent that musician on their shirt.

This article also says that another way musicians make money is from selling concert tickets. The incentive for listeners to buy these tickets is that they want a chance to see their favorite musicians perform live, which is a chance they don’t get very often. Musicians gain opportunities to perform as well as the money they make from selling concert tickets. Listeners gain because they get to watch and enjoy the concert. Sources Beat
