Music is Getting Simpler

People respond to incentives in predictable ways. Musicians have the incentive to make more music of lower complexity rather than to produce smaller amounts of complex music, so that’s what they do.

People respond to incentives in predictable ways. Musicians have the incentive to make more music of lower complexity rather than to produce smaller amounts of complex music, so that’s what they do. According to The Smithsonian, pop music is scientifically proven to have gotten simpler. The average number of chords and melodies in songs as well as the complexity of lyrics has been on a downward trend. The reason for this is that most pop-musician’s incentives is to make money rather than to make good music. Musicians respond to the incentive to be able to make more money in predictable ways: making more simple songs.

Listeners of pop music don’t care about music complexity. This means that there’s no incentive for musicians to make complex music. Listeners will buy simple music, and it takes less effort on the musician/writers to write simple songs. Listeners are happy because they’re getting more music from their favorite artists. By making more simple music, musicians are both satisfying their incentives to make money and please their audience at the same time.

Future research:

Is simple music really worse if it’s what people are choosing to buy?

  1. I liked the topic and how you were able to relate the research question to your research. I have also noticed that most music today lacks creativity and is made only to make money. The formatting was off, it was just one long line. You could copy and paste your text into the html code instead of right on the page.
