Trades are the exchange of players. When trades occur, the players’ contracts are swapped, so it is not just about how good the player is when a general manager evaluates his overall value. If the player is getting paid a lot of money per year, for example, he may be a less attractive trade chip. Also, some players may have no-trade clauses, which allows them to reject going to particular teams in the league.

Free agent signings are simply acquiring a player by giving up money in return as opposed to a player. This also means that a player’s contract with his old team had expired and that they can sign with any team of their choosing. There will usually be many contract negotiations between players and general managers so both can get the best deal possible for themselves. Free agent signings always occur during the winter/offseason.
